Description |
The three fuel oil-fired kilns at Malibu Potteries. Each kiln was 18 feet in diameter, with a floor area of 201 sq. ft. Tile blanks that had been previously dried at low temperatures in an oven were then blasted to more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit to produce a "bisque" tile blank. This assured a very tight bond between the clay and the subsequently applied ceramic glaze. The subsequently glazed bisque tiles were again fired to 1700-1800 degrees F, melting the powdered glass and developing the colors of the metal oxides. |
