Description |
May Rindge's intent to sell Rindge Railway, 1906. This letter was written to the Vice-President of the Western Pacific Railway Co. a little over four months after the death of her husband, and two and a half years after incorporation of the railroad. In it she offers to sell the railroad right-of-way across the ranch, from Las Flores Canyon to Little Sycamore Canyon, for $500,000. At this point in time, she was in no particular need of money, and could not possibly have anticipated her future financial woes. The letter tries to make the right of way sound as attractive as possible. It suggests indirectly that she had no particular interest in the longterm value of the Rindge railway as an investment. She would use the railway substantially over the next decade or two to move crops and supplies around the ranch, but this could have been done just as well, and at considerably less expense, by horses and wagons. Western Pacific showed some initial cautious interest in the Rindge railway, but after four months of back and forth correspondence the issue seems to have faded away. The railway was used for another dozen years or so, and then gradually dismantled. |
