Description |
Two early views of the Rindge mansion as it transitioned to the Serra Retreat. The first view is the earliest known aerial photograph of the mansion, from May 19, 1932, about the time construction ceased. The basic physical structure is essentially complete. Many of the Malibu tiles intended to decorate the mansion were actually installed at this time, mostly in below-ground rooms. Thousands more were stored in one of the below-ground service rooms, and inherited by the Franciscans. Note the curved concrete wall at the bottom of the photo. This was obviously intended to be an observation point overlooking the ocean. It would later become Serra Point, a contemplative space developed by the Franciscans - but clearly already designed and built by May Rindge. The second view is an aerial photo of the mansion shortly after the Franciscans bought it in early 1942, before any construction of the future Serra Retreat had begun. |
