Malibu Potteries produced ca. 3 3/4" x 6 3/4" loose leaf catalogs of handpainted ceramic tile products for use by salesmen. Some of the individual paintings were nearly full page; some were as small as 1/4" x 3/4". Particularly exquisite are the large tile panels. They were painted by Inez von Hake and possibly by Margaret Curtis Smith as well, using the large watercolor reproductions (see MP-43) as a guide for individual tiles. These smaller catalog pages were also watercolors, but were coated with shellac to give them a glossy, tile-like appearance. With age the shellac has tarnished, giving the paintings an orange-gold hue which in many cases extends slightly beyond the figure outlines (see e.g. p2). These catalogs are highly sought after by collectors. |
