Description |
Malibu Potteries, like many other California tile-makers of the 1920s-30s, produced a number of tiles based on alleged Mayan themes. Many decades later, Ronald Rindge of the Malibu Lagoon Museum contacted an expert on Mayan art, who viewed a number of samples of Malibu Mayan tile designs and determined that none of them corresponded to any examples of Mayan art he had ever seen except in a generalized way. The same was probably true of other California tile-makers as well. Mayan tiles were most often used as inserts in tiled floors, or on fireplace mantles. An impressive use of these tiles can be seen in the interior of the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles. The examples shown here were scanned from Mayan tiles in the Museum's collection, from original line drawings in the Museum's archives, or from photographs of authenticated Malibu Mayan tiles. Tiles are not shown to scale. |
