Description |
An early example of a good quality dirt road along the beach. In 1910, Los Angeles County paid for a good quality dirt road that could support heavy wagon and moderate automotive traffic between Santa Monica and the eastern boundary of Rancho Malibu (Las Flores Creek). After numerous legal wrangles, LA County built a similar dirt road from Las Flores Creek to the Ventura County line. This photo is most likely of the Santa Monica Road, although we cannot be certain. The earlier Santa Monica road increased traffic upcoast to Rancho Malibu, and magnified the growing demand for full public access across Rancho Malibu and on up the coast to Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Barbara, resulting in the Los Angeles County road a dozen years later. |
