Description |
In 1903, Frederick H. Rindge Sr., together with fellow investors, incorporated a railway which they named the Hueneme, Malibu and Port Los Angeles Railway. The precise reasoning for constructing the railway have never been entirely clear. The name of it suggests it was originally entended to stretch from the site of the "Long Wharf", which served briefly as a port for Los Angeles, about 12 miles east of the ranch boundary, to Hueneme, a promising port about a dozen miles west of the ranch. Only about 15 miles of standard guage track was ever laid, and the line was used only by gasoline motor-driven flat cars for moving ranch products and supplies. The booklet presented here, "The Determined Mrs. Rindge and Her Legendary Railroad," is the only published story of this railroad. While it contains a few minor errors, it is an excellent introduction to this interesting chapter of Rancho Malibu history. This booklet can be purchased from the Ventura County Library for a modest price. (see also RMb-90, -93) |
