Description |
In early 1940, in connection with a widening of Roosevelt Highway into the new Highway 101, the land on which the Olas Grandes Inn was situated was proposed for condemnation, since the highway could only be widened on its land side. Walter Gunn, a Malibu resident, bought the Inn and moved it about 1/4 mile east to the corner of Rambla Pacifico, where it stands today. The Inn operation continued for a short time, but was soon converted to a variety of other small businesses. The gas station was not moved. In its new location, the "Inn," in its new incarnation as the Malibu Plaza Building became (and still is) an important commercial center for eastern Malibu. Among other functions, it housed one of the few official US Post Offices in Malibu at the time (beginning in 1947), which is still there, and the new Malibu Times local newspaper, since relocated to lower Las Florence Canyon. Note the upper floor has now been enclosed. (see DM-62, -62.1) |
