Frontal view of the Rindge home, with cultivated land in front. Photo ca. 1896. The Rindges named the "street" in front of the home Mariposa Lane - at that time the only street and home in "Malibu". Today, this street is called Mariposa de Oro, and is lined with luxury homes, as is the entire cultivated field seen here. The peak behind and to the left of the house is where May Rindge would build her "castle" in 1929-30. Construction of the latter was never completed, and the unfinished home and surrounding property was sold in 1942 to the Franciscan Order. It is today's Serra Retreat. |
