Description |
Another category of Malibu tiles, in the same series (B) as the Mayan tiles, were the so-called "insert tiles." Like the Mayan tiles, many of them were used as decorative inserts in fireplace mantels. They could also be inserted into interior or exterior solid walls, or simply framed and used for decoration anywhere. The designs are colorful and interesting, showing birds, flowers, or lovely outdoor nature scenes. These were produced in much fewer numbers than, for example, the E series tiles. Their resulting scarcity, together with their beguiling, detailed designs, make them some of the most sought after - and expensive - classic Malibu tiles. The tiles are not shown to scale. Those shown in black on a beige ground are from the Malibu Potteries Standard Sales Catalog. Polychrome tiles are from the museum or various private collections |
