Description |
Rhoda Rindge Adamson had a definite racing streak in her. In her teen years she was already racing cars in the annual Santa Monica street races (see FF109-112). As a young married woman she also became interested in sailboat racing. In 1925 the renowned Seattle-based ship designer Ted Geary had designed the 100-ft. fantail yacht "Malibu" for the Rindge family (FF64-69). A year or so later, for a different client, he designed a state-of-the-art R-class racing boat called "Pirate." Rhoda Adamson bought this boat when it became available through re-sale in 1934. When Geary relocated to Southern California, he and Rhoda entered and won several prestigious races. Those portions of the history of Pirate relating to the Adamson family are recounted in the attached article excerpted from Wooden Boat Magazine, Sep/Oct 2006, pp 38-47. Geary's daughter Sharon would eventually marry Merritt Adamson Jr., and the elder Adamson's gave them Pirate as a wedding present. |
